Guten tag ! welcome or welcome back to my blog!
I've been getting considerable questions about learning and speaking languages, and since it's one of my fave activities to do, II dedicate this blog post to share my journey in speaking languages with you ;).
Learning a foreign language is discovering a new culture and getting into a whole new vibe, but still a bit challenging. It might seem fun and exciting at the beginning when learning small sentences and greeting expressions and then it starts to get a little complicated when things get bigger and more more serious, and that's one of the main reasons people give up before they even start.
Despite the difficulties, the multi-language acquisition is rapidly growing in popularity around the world and bilingualism is becoming more of a highly-desired resume addition.
The fact is that learning a new language is a whole journey that requires effort, commitment, and daily practice. Trust me, You don't have to spend your money in centers or buy the expensive "learn English in a 1 month" kinda course. It can all be done from home, especially since the internet is offering us high chances and easier ways to become a polyglot. In this article, I'll be sharing with you tips tricks, and apps that play a big role in mastering any language.
1. Choose a language: Pick up a language you find interesting. You're more likely to stay committed to things you're interested in . It can be a language you've heard in a movie, podcast, song or tv show.
2. Make a study plan and start learning: Prepare a study plan that suits you (Check out time management post to know how to make a study plan) and start from basic sentences and more common topics like introducing yourself, describing a family member... and also the most used words which you will integrate whenever you express an idea. (to be/ to have, modal verbs, pronouns, adjectives) You might want to focus on one vocabulary topic each week. An organized routine will make your learning more manageable and easy to get.
3. practice daily : Always practice what you've learned so far to refresh your memory and train it for effective and quick functioning. By doing so, you avoid getting your lessons accumulated which means harder to remember. A 15-20 min revision per day is highly sufficient.
4. Speak loud: The secret to having a good accent is to practice that! every language has its tones and intonation, but a common mistake that most learners make is to read in silence or read with their eyes. This doesn't help much to improve pronunciation. It is so important to pronounce each word to know the difference between sounds and train your tongue to pronounce them correctly. The more you practice that the better your accent becomes.
5. Connect with the World: If there’s a community of people who speak the language you want to learn in your city, start attending events! Friendship is one of the best ways to learn a foreign language, and the easiest way to get comfortable with Slang, intonation, and mannerisms. You might even teach them your language and have fun together;)
6. Listen to podcasts: Similar to watching a foreign movie, try listening to a podcast in your target language. Start with short and simple podcasts to see how much you can understand and search for words you don't know . Listening to the news in another language is also an effective way to learn vocabulary and conversational structures fast.
7. Be patient with yourself: Nothing is more frustrating than feeling like you’re stuck in a rut and not making any progress. It is imperative to keep in mind that learning a language is like stepping into an entirely new world, and it’s going to take some time. Trust the process and the knowledge you’ve gained so far, and let them propel you further forward in your foreign language journey.
Here are some apps and browser extensions that helped me in my journey !
1. Toucan extension: Toucan is a free extension that will show you words and phrases in your target language as you browse the internet. Language learning doesn't get easier than that! You can choose from languages like Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and more!
2. busuu : This is my top favorite app for learning languages. Not only does it teach you languages , it also makes you familiar with the culture related to it and gets you in the spirit of a foreign person ;) It offers both free and premium plans for learning more than 20 languages. You can define your level by taking a quick test or starting from A0. It also offers recognizable certificates from MC GRAW HILL EDUCATION that you can include in your resume!
3. Youtube : Youtube is still one of the best methods to learn any language. You can find unlimited free and detailed lessons and courses , listen to podcasts, music, or even test yourself through tasks and exams and more. All you have to do is to type the language you want to learn in the search bar and thousands of videos will appear in a sec ;)
4. Duolingo : Who doesn't know duolingo, one of the first and most effective platforms for learning languages for free! learn words and sentences on daily basis.
5. Elsa speak: An app I really appreciate and highly recommend to practice pronunciation and perfect your accent in English! ! All you need to do is take a test to define your pronunciation level. A customized study plan will be made for you which you can adjust as you want. The process is simple: It recommends you sentences to pronounce depending on your level, then identifies your pronunciation weaknesses and corrects your mistakes. You can pick up sentences from a variety of topics, or simply type any sentence and it helps you with it. Elsa speak offers both free and paid plans.
Conclusion:
There are unlimited ways to learn a foreign language and there will be certain things that you’ll find that will work well for you, But one thing is sure; There is no perfect timing to learn a new language. Get over your leisure and hesitation and get started now ;).
