History:                                                                    @damiz_17

The fort of Santa Cruz was erected in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Spaniards who were trying to oppose the Ottomans.
The latter, who had invaded and brought down the Byzantine Empire in 1453, had made themselves masters of a vast Empire that they extended throughout the Middle East, in the Horn of Africa and in North Africa. The Spaniards viewed the extension of this Empire with a negative eye and, supported by the Moors and arab tribes, they had this fort built in order to resist the Turks.
the construction of the fort reportedly required the transfer of stones on the slopes through windingand difficult paths, and all the necessary materials were brought: iron, wood, sand, lime, water, etc.from the hill shaped port road.
The fort had been improved for the first time in 1509, from an older construction. Located on the Mountain of Eidour, an idealist position to defend the city.

Destroyed and rebuilt many times, it is not in the configurations of the late sixteenth century that it presents itself today. During the French colonization it was completely restored between 1854 and 1860 by the French Military Engineers.

The fort housed the Spanish governor of Oran and his military garrison. The governor had large apartments and three rainwater cisterns, in order to be able to withstand a siege.

The Chapel Of Santa Cruz:

The Fort  faces a Catholic church, located a little below: the Chapel of Santa Cruz, which is managed by the diocese of Oran.
The Santa Cruz Chapel is located at the top of Jebel Murdjadjo on the hill slope.
It was built by colonial France in 1850 on the heights of Jebel Murdjadjo. The construction of this building was decided because of a cholera epidemic that killed thousands of people a year.
It has been restored many times over the years, whether by France during colonization or by Algeria after independence.
this chapel has been renovated and  built with a tower, with a statue of the virgin mary , and is said to be a replica of that found in dam de la garde in marseille , aka notre dame de salo de santa cruz.

Santa Cruz Castel:                                                    @damiz_17

Santa Cruz Castle is one of three Castles in oran , Algeria's second largest coastal city; the other twocastles are the castle de la mon on the western edge of the port and the castle of san felipe, an alternative to the ancient castle of saints, famous for its spanish castle of castillo de los santos . The three castles are connected by tunnels. Santa Cruz Castle was built between 1577and 1604 by the Spanish 400 metres above sea level. in 1831, the french occupied oran and the castle. It is located on the top of Marjajo Mountain, its strategic position has helped to maintain its sound shape over the years from where there are views of Mers-el-Kebir , the strategic military port of Oran. Beneath the castle,

It takes about twenty minutes by car to get from the city center to the chapel. The view of the bay and the town of Oran from the Chapel is breathtaking. Walking a little on the other side of the mountainside it is also possible to see the bay of Mersa El Kébir.

Arriving on Santa Cruz, the calm reigns, the place exudes a serene climate and an impressive freshness because of the pine forest that surrounds it and its position in height.

Today, the fort is in good condition. This allowed the municipality to highlight it to make visitors discover this little-known history of Algeria.
